1. What are the advantages of a structured interview?

Moore (2017) argues that if an interviewer asks different questions of each candidate, the result is “inconsistency across interviews that reduces their comparability.” If interview questions are not the same across the board, it may give certain applicants the opportunity to “shine” over others whose skills and experience may not have been discussed during the interview. Structured interviews are the “single most important thing organizations can do to increase their predictive validity” in HR processes (Moore, 2017).

Each question in a structured interview should have a point to which the applicant responds; This will assist the hiring official in determining who is best-suited for the position, as both good and bad answers to the same set of questions should highlight themselves when compared to each other (Moore, 2017). While many organizations choose not to employ structured interviews because they are more boring for everyone, the consistency they provide is far more important than the social experience of the interview itself.

2. Identify and discuss one court case that refines case law related to discrimination in the interview.

For this question I decided to pick the Stamps v. Detroit Edison (1973) case. This case is primarily about racial discrimination. Willie Stamps felt as if he and all blacks were being racial discriminated against by Detroit Edison. It was his complaint that blacks were treated unfairly when it comes to hiring and promoting them. He complained that no job related test and educational and non-job related requirements were utilized as a means to screen out blacks disproportionate to whites. “Until recent years, the defendant Detroit Edison Company discriminated against its black employees by excluding them from its desirable jobs except in token numbers. Prior to the end of 1968 the Company employed a relatively small number of blacks in a few jobs, primarily as janitors and servicemen in the Building and Properties Department, as utility servicemen and more recently as laborers and stockmen in the Stores and Transportation Department. These few jobs in which blacks were employed offered lower pay than most of its skilled trade occupations and little or no advancement opportunities. Some whites were also employed in these low opportunity jobs, but virtually no blacks were employed in high opportunity, skilled jobs. Many black employees who were limited to low opportunity jobs possessed qualifications equal to or greater than many of the whites whom the Company hired without prior skills or experience and trained for specific trades or crafts within the Company” (Justia US Law, 1973). Detroit Edison denied all claims of discrimination said they offer blacks the same opportunities they offer everyone else. The case was ruled in the favor of Willie Stock as discrimination was found by the courts. Detroit was ordered to pay and had a pretty hefty list of changed and mandates that must be made. It is very unfortunate that these things take place in the work force but it is great to know that there are consequences for those who decide to break the law.
